The first day of school
I rush about the corridors in my new blue pinafore and school bag. My hair in two pigtails - much to my annoyance. There's already a crowd at the notice board where the classes are indicated. Takes a while to find out where I and little sis are going to be spending the rest of the year. Finally make it back through the crowd of yelling kids and wet-in-the-rain parents. Another mad rush to the classroom. Ensure that sis is dropped safely to her class and then make my way to my own. Ah, familiar faces! Am glad my friends are with me. One or two have been moved to different divisions, but most are here. There's a lot of shouting, hello's and welcomes in the air. A few minutes later, the bell rings, parents vanish from the corridors, the noise quietens and the class teacher walks in. We all groan (inwardly, of course!). This is not going to be a good year.....
First day of school brings back a lot of memories. The smell of the first rain and the smell of new school books go together. Brown wrapping paper, the thrill of new book labels, school bags, the school bus.....catching up with friends, noticing the new boys (and the old ones!), class elections for monitor, meeting old favorite teachers.....No worries in the world except wondering how you're going to cope with this years Math syllabus. No headaches about earning an income , worrying about promotions or office politics. Who knew life would be so different in the world of grown-ups?
(It's a different issue that I still don't feel that I'm a 'grown-up').
