Are you a good listener?
Samaritans Helpline is an helpline for the distressed, depressed and the suicidal. The purpose of the helpline is to provide emotional support for anyone who might need it. And you will agree, that in this city, there is no dearth of people who are lonely, depressed or distraught. The recent spate of suicides only serves to highlight the need for more people to reach out to those in need.
The Samaritans helpline works 365 days, 3-9 on weekdays and 10-9 on weekends. The helpline is run entirely by volunteers - ordinary MW's like you and me. The centre is at Seva Niketan, Byculla (on JJ Road) and is perhaps the only Samaritans centre in the world that has a Professional Unit attached to it.The Professional Unit offers therapy, counseling and other services for mental illness. It is run by competent psychologists, psychiatrists and occupational therapists.
All services provided by Samaritans are absolutely free, confidential and anonymous.
Samaritans Helpline is looking for volunteers who are good listeners, non-judgemental and are open to providing emotional support to people who might need it, especially in times of distress. If you can spare a minimum 3 hours a week for your fellow Mumbaiwallah's, please volunteer.
Call 23092068 for more information on the Orientation program for potential volunteers.
If you can't volunteer, atleast pass on the details to your friends, relatives, colleagues, fellow bloggies. Or get Samaritans to have a little 'talk' for your workplace, housing society, college or kids school. Remember, it doesn't cost anything.
And Who knows,a life might be saved.
