I am Sam

Last night I watched 'I am Sam', a compelling story about mentally challenged Sam (a fabulous Sean Penn) raising his daughter Lucy with the help of some extraordinary friends . As Lucy turns seven and begins to surpass her father intellectually, the situation comes under the scrutiny of a social worker who wants to place Lucy under foster care. The rest of the movie is about how Sam along with a reluctant lawyer (Michelle Pfeiffer) goes about battling with the legal system and Life itself to get custody of Lucy.

One line from the movie stayed with me much after the telly was switched off. Sam goes to visit Lucy one day at the foster home. He takes one look at her and says," You've grown! Your ears are bigger, your eyes older..." And Lucy looks back at him with a sad expression that says she knows exactly what he means....

I look at myself in the mirror and feel Old Eyes looking back at this-person-who-they-say-is-Me. Eyes that have seen too much, read too much, known too much. Eyes that belong to an ancient body and a wise mind. Not to Me.

It's been a while since I've felt like Me.
